Event Highlights
Melbourne is renowned for its New Year’s Eve celebrations and 2016 was no exception. Over half a million Melbournians made their way into the City, with public transport running all night. There were 4 major sites including Flagstaff Gardens, Docklands, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain. They ran from 9 pm until 1 am with food outlets, free entertainment and restroom facilities. The Council spent around the $3M dollar mark and it generates close to $8M dollars for the City restaurants, hotels and other tourist facilities. It was very much a family-friendly event, with fireworks as the main attraction starting early at certain locations, making it easier to get little one’s home at a reasonable time. Stage shows and alcohol-free areas were also a popular alternative for those heading into town with the family.
